Julie’s, London: ‘Its time has clearly come again’ – restaurant review | Restaurants | The Guardian

Known as a hotspot for celeb parties, Julie’s is now also serving up great food for its own beautiful people It’s very tempting to discuss Julie’s in London’s Holland Park without ever mentioning the food. That would be a thing, wouldn’t it: a restaurant review that went big on the plump furnishings and the clientele, but didn’t mention a single dish?If ever there was a candidate for that treatment it’s Julie’s; a venerable neighbourhood bistro famous because Tina Turner once danced on a table, leaving her heel mark in the veneer, which they never repaired. Kate Moss had a birthday party here.I’ve checked the Good Food Guide for both 1975 and 1985. It wasn’t in either and, back then, the bar was pretty low. The 1975 guide includes an entry for Bloom’s in Whitechapel, which says much of the food was dire and the service awful. Yet they still couldn’t find room for Julies.Eating outside, under the new, tree-embraced awnings, is a friend of mine, a veteran of the music business. He tells me he had an office next door to the restaurant when it was first opened in 1969 by interior designer Julie Hodgess. “She used our Gestetner machine to print menus and she’d get us to try the wine and the food,” Carl says.

Imagine a combination of great dishes and the pleasant staff, this is exactly what this place offers. The fine service is something these restaurateurs care about. Pay attractive prices for eating at this spot. Was told to basically leave her Diner on Father’s Day by Julie the owner. We questioned why we were told 15 minutes and after 45 minutes then told another 1/2 hour. Would of preferred to been told upfront 1 hour and would of gone elsewhere. They took a party of six before us by mistake (you could tell the hostess kept looking at us as we waited a very long time).I’ve been going there 20 years since they opened. I guess Julie forgot the locals who made her business a success and now can just kick customers out who question why a party was taken in front of them. A simple apology and putting 2 table’s together would of gone a long way.

Conspirituality 2022. This is the text of a talk I gave at… | by Jules Evans | Medium

This is the text of a talk I gave at Medicine festival in August 2022, on the rise of conspiracy thinking in New Age culture. This is the text of a talk I gave at Medicine festival in August 2022, summarising research I and others have done in the last three years on conspiracy thinking in New Age spirituality. I’m going to…And then I was the first to resurrect it to make sense of what was happening in the pandemic. My piece in April 2020 inspired Derek Beres to start a podcast on the topic, called Conspirituality, which he has been running ever since with co-hosts Matthew Remski and Julian Walker. So you end up with New Age hippies becoming useful idiots for Russian propaganda, spreading the Kremlin-created meme that the war was to defend the world from Ukrainian biolabs for example. At least one New Age influencer — Holocaust-denying 5G-attacking anti-Semitic guru Sacha Stone — claims to be directly working with Russian intelligence.

Julie Anderson (formerly Kanya Samarpana Remembrance) withdrew from the Free Renunciate Order and the Da Avabhasa Gurukula Kanyadana Kumari Order at the conclusion of the “reality considerations” that took place in Sri Love-Anandashram during the months of June and July 1992. JULIE ANDERSON: I feel profound gratitude to my Beloved Master, Sri Da Avabhasa, for what He has Given me in recent months, and I want to help you to feel the real significance of my withdrawal from the Free Renunciate Order and to understand even more deeply how our Great Master Works. I am feeling the impact of all that has happened to me recently, and I am also feeling how profound Sri Gurudev’s Love is for me and how much Work He has done with me.Gurudev would address me about these things, but I felt that they didn’t really make any difference. They were just arising and I thought I had the capacity to stand free of them. They weren’t disturbing to me, I could just release the body-mind in meditation, so what difference did it make if they were arising? Julie's restaurant: new owners hope it's third time lucky for historic Holland Park brasserie | The Standard

Mick Jagger was a regular and Tina Turner danced on the tables… Will the new owners get rekindle an old flame, asks Josh Barrie In the basement of Julie’s, a 55-year-old restaurant in Holland Park, there is a table famously dubbed the “G-spot”. It has been discreet for decades: a practically unbookable snug in the corner, curtained from prying eyes. Tina Turner once danced on top of it, her heel marks a telltale memory of debauchery long preserved.Quite how much, she won’t say, but securing the lease involved fighting off a three Michelin-star chef and, rumour has it, one of the capital’s best-known restaurateurs. Given Julie’s was once one of Sir Mick Jagger’s favourite haunts — Sir Paul McCartney’s too — it seems a glamorous place to start in the restaurant game.It was opened by the celebrated interior designer Julie Hodgess in 1969 and became the stomping ground of the “great and the good”. Locals loved it; its heyday continued long past the Seventies and Eighties. The clientele was diverse and I want that to be the case now.” But as interest waned slightly, things changed. In more recent years the restaurant had been “Michelin guided”, MacBain says. But Julie’s was never about the food — it was a place to spend a fair whack on wine and forget about doing so by the morning.

Julie's restaurant review: I’ve fallen in love all over again | The Standard

The new Julie’s isn’t arch, fiddly, or overdone, says Dylan Jones, but just somehow right For years, Julie’s was a bohemian outlier smack bang in the middle of residential Holland Park, a rather ramshackle old bar and restaurant which appealed to the kind of people who still thought Portobello Road was the acme of alternative London.Julie’s was named after its first proprietor, the interior designer Julie Hodgess, and managed to stay fashionable throughout the Seventies and Eighties, patronised by the likes of Tom Cruise, Naomi Campbell, Princess Diana and Annie Lennox. The restaurant even hosted Kate Moss’s 22nd birthday party. It closed at the beginning of last year, just three years after it was relaunched with a major refurbishment, but has now been reinvented with some panache. Before the sale from the old to the current owners, Josh Leon, the director of restaurant sales at Savills, said: “Julie’s is one of those places that’s earned a permanent place in London’s restaurant pantheon.Julie’s has been resuscitated by Tara MacBain, who happens to be a Holland Park resident, Cordon Bleu-trained chef and a former Julie’s regular, who brought in chef patron Owen Kenworthy (previously of Brawn and the Pelican), and who wanted to turn it into an urban version of a neighbourhood French brasserie.

An inedible catastrophe: Julie’s Restaurant reviewed | The Spectator

At Julie’s at the fag end of Saturday lunchtime, Notting Hill beauties are defiantly not eating, and the table is covered with crumbs. Restaurant Ozymandias, I think to myself. This is no longer a district for the perennially wracked, or unrich. The Black Cross – Martin Amis’s ideal pub in London Fields – is now a sushi joint.I don’t trust restaurant myth-making – let longevity be the judge, and this is the third Julie’s on the site – but it was for a while the sort of place that glossy magazine people wrote about when glossy magazines mattered: like Langan’s, the Grill Room at the Connaught and Le Caprice. This third Julie’s has been kindly reviewed. Possibly it is nostalgia – the first Julie’s was good, it sold sausages and mash – but, as you know, the nostalgic is not yearning for place but for himself when he was there. He is reviewing himself, when young. We go to the front desk for the bill. Our food was inedible, I say, we couldn’t eat it. The woman hands me the bill with angry eyes, as if I have failed Julie’s because I do not understand it, and, in doing so, am unworthy of it.
